Founded in 1981, after receipt of his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1980, Mathematical Programming Services (MPS) was established to provide software development services for applications requiring advanced mathematical functions in contexts requiring high precision and fast run times. Assignments completed during the first decade of operation include the following:
- Conversion of scientific FORTRAN programs developed by Boeing Computer Services for satellite docking operations. This work was carried out under contract with Control Data
Corporation.
- Development of Kalman Filter algorithms for tracking airborne vehicles using Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) observations from multiple sites. Contract work on this Precision Location and Strike System (PLSS) at Lockheed Missiles & Space Corporation was again carried out under contract with Control Data Corporation.
- Development of Kalman Filter algorithms for satellite tracking in the MILSTAR system, done under contract with Lockheed Missiles and Space Corporation.
- Development of rotationally invariant curve fitting algorithms for quality control in the manufacture of medical catheters. This was a machine vision system which fit sequences of lines and circular arcs through the digitized image of catheters of known specifications, taken with cameras connected to a computer through a custom board interface. This work was done under contract with Futronix, Inc.
During the second decade of operations, Dr. Davis has focused on mathematical programming models for portfolio optimization and procurement optimization in the supply chain management arena.
- Development of a custom EXCEL application for maximizing the Cash Equivalent Value of Asset Allocations for various Risk Tolerance assumptions. The system also included the ability to "backtest" a model by simulating its performance on historical data. Work done under contract with Benham Capital Management Services, which was subsequently acquired by Twentieth Century.
- Development of a custom mixed integer programming model for minimizing the cost of parts procurement via volume discount exploitation. The envisioned application would involve multiple procurement sites and myultiple suppliers, so that large orders can be formed through the aggregation of requirements from the various procurement sites. This work, which validated the model through successful running 27 different supply-demand scenarios, was done under contract with Sunol Software Systems (a startup which did not get funded).
- Subsequent to the dissolution of Sunol, MPS developed a custom EXCEL application for Procurement Optimization which implements the mixed integer model developed for Sunol, but now owned by MPS.
It is anticipated that during this third decade of operations, MPS will be engaged in making both portfolio optimization and procurement optimization available via web-based systems featuring browser interfaces and servers equipped with high-powered optimization engines. For a glimpse of that future, be sure to stop by the online demos section of this site.
